Alcohol Dementia

Recent attention is being paid to Alcohol Dementia or Alcohol Related Dementia or Alcohol related brain damage. It is also used in conjunction with another brain damage syndrome known as wet-brain, or Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS). However, research indicates more men than women suffer from ARD.  WKS sufferers are more heterogeneous. When a person suffers from ARD, they suffer from the toxic effect of alcohol on the brain and the liver. Vitamin deficiency (particularly thiamine) contributes to Alcohol dementia. Chronic and prolonged alcohol abuse results in the diminishment of cognitive and executive brain functioning. Alcohol abuse damages the make-up of the grey and white matter in the brain which means there is structural and functional damage to the brain.
