Alkaloids are the organic components in most plants (especially flowering plants). Alkaloids are colorless, nonvolatile and generally have a bitter taste. Alkaloids have a specific physiological effect on humans and other animals. Substances such as opium, morphine, ephedrine, and nicotine contain alkaloids.
