ACOA

The initials stand for Adult Child/Children of Alcoholics. The expression refers to an adult who manifests symptoms characteristic of a child who grew up in a dysfunctional house with an adult who abused alcohol. Today, the initials also represent a 12-Step Program for those whose parents/guardians were alcoholics. It is estimated that one in five adults grew up in a family with an active alcoholic.
