A comprehensive addiction assessment must be done to get an accurate diagnosis of a person suffering from an addiction. A thorough history must be taken, as well as a physical, psychological, and mental assessment. A professional addiction physician should complete these assessments. A person suffering from drug addiction may have an underlying mental health issue or a person seemingly suffering from a mental health disorder may have an underlying drug addiction. Without a comprehensive assessment, a person’s diagnosis can be erroneous. A variety of assessment tools are used.
