Addiction

Addiction is a disease of the brain that is manifested by the inability to control the use of a substance or behavior. The result of addiction is an alteration in brain function and chemistry. It leads to changes in behavior, thinking, and body functions. The process of becoming addicted is progressive. The body and the mind demand more of the substance or the action to feel satisfied. After a while, a choice to use or not act out is no longer an option. Research has shown that mental illness and addictive behavior are often combined. Generally, intervention and treatment are needed to break the cycle of addiction.
