Advocacy is the practice of defending or promoting a cause. In recovery, advocacy can take several forms, but they are always centered on supporting, defending, or intervening for clients in need of treatment. The goal is to alter the public and professional attitudes toward drug and alcohol addiction. Additionally, an advocate can be an addiction physician, and addiction therapist are dedicated to helping substance abusers find recovery. That process may entail helping the client confront his or her actions, take responsibility, or reframe how he or she thinks about issues concerning self, etc.
