Age at Onset

Age at onset (age of onset) generally refers to a time in a person’s development when a disease pattern first emerges. As with many diseases, adolescence is a time associated with several physical, psychological, emotional, and social problems. Many people who suffer from addiction also have an underlying mental health disorder which can be traced back to early adulthood. The earlier the age of onset of substance use the more likely the development of addiction.
